Boys’ lacrosse lost in an admirable 6-8 fight against Winchester in its first game of the season, Saturday, March 26.
Despite the scoreboard, senior Jack Caissie put up a strong fight against Winchester’s offensive line. Head coach George Jenkins said, “Jack was really the hard hat helmet of the game.”
According to Jenkins, Caissie stood out because of his lockdown matchups in one-on-one defense, strong wing play, communication with teammates, and the energy he brought to the team.
Both teams played fiercely as the ball zigzagged between both halves of the field. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for Winchester to gain an early lead, scoring twice in quick succession.
North didn’t back down, and junior Miles Esmonde ran through a gap in Winchester’s defensive line, sending the ball into the net.
Esmonde then scored another quick goal, tying the score and evening out the playing field for the Tigers.
Not long after, North’s defensive line wavered, and through a series of swift passes, Winchester scored three consecutive goals.
As the gap in the scoreboard widened, the Tigers’ frustration and nerves were felt throughout the stadium.
Torcasio said, “We had dead energy to start the game, but during the second half we really picked it up.”
Before the final whistle, Esmonde scored his third goal, bringing his game total to a hat-trick.
Senior Freddy Torcasio, a captain alongside seniors Miles Esmonde and Dylan Leone, gave the Tigers their last goal, swinging the ball into the net in a display of true skill.
According to the captains, the Tigers are looking to maintain positive enthusiasm throughout their next game.
North, 2-1, crushed Framingham on March 31 and Natick on April 7. The team will play Brookline Thursday, April 9.
