Boys’ track and field narrowly beat out Framingham and Needham with scores of 71 and 74, respectively, Wednesday, April 29.
Math teacher Shawn Wallace, the head coach, said he’d been hopeful before the meet that the Tigers would add another two wins to their 7-2 record.
According to Wallace, “We have very strong distance and middle distance runners.”
Junior Ryan Costello, a captain alongside seniors Max Badri, George Rumkin, and Logan Smith, placed first in the 800m, setting a new personal record of 1:58.55.
In the mile, North swept the leaderboard, as juniors Will Kenneally, Alex Daly, and Matthew Gallo placed first, second, and third, respectively.
Junior Jonah Penn placed first in the two mile, running a personal best of 10:30.90.
However, the Tigers’ performances were marred by a rocky 4×100 relay. After two timing mishaps at the start, the baton handoff during the final lap went awry as the last runner, sophomore Finn Larimer, tripped over his partner, resulting in a disqualification.
Wallace added, “There’s lots of things that could have been wrong. Maybe the outgoing runner didn’t take off early enough. Maybe the incoming runner went to the inside when they should have been on the outside.”
During the 4×400 relay, Badri ran an impressive second leg to put North in second place overall, and junior Zeke Young clinched second place in the 110m hurdles.
North, 7-2, will race in the Bay State Conference Championships Wednesday, May 20.
