Girls' gymnastics performing well with smallest team in team history

by Adam Rabinowitz
With the smallest team in the team’s history, girls’ gymnastics, 4-2, is working hard to keep up past successes.
With just 10 members, one of the biggest worries coming into the season was injuries, according to senior Sofia Leav, a captain with with seniors Rachel Adamsky and Calley Dias.
According to Dias, injuries and size have not affected the performance of the team.
Leav added that one of the perks of having a small team is that everyone is at around the same level and that the team is able to bond well.
The team is comprised of 5 upperclassmen and 5 underclassmen, a blend which Leav finds strong due to their past gymnastics experience.
“Everyone on the team is an experienced gymnast. A couple of people are new to the world of competitive gymnastics, but everyone has at least some gymnastics or cheerleading background,” she said.
With the season well underway, Dias added that the team is now working on correcting small details in their routines “like pointed toes and straight legs, which can really make a difference in scores.”
Much like in past years, one of the Tigers’ goals this season is to qualify for Sectionals at the end of the season, after not qualifying last year.
On top of Sectionals, Leav added that the team is focused on the State Individuals meet.
The Tigers will compete against rival Wellesley at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Excel gym in Newton, a meet for which the Tigers are working hard to prepare.
“[Wellesley] hadn’t lost a meet in 6 years and then we beat them last year, so this meet is big for us. People are going to pull out big skills, and we’ll probably get a lot of personal records because people are trying new things and trying really hard,” said Leav.
