Boys’ hockey asserted a 4-2 victory over South at Senior Night, Saturday, Feb. 14.
Three minutes into the first period, two fights broke out, resulting a penalty and powerplay for each team.
Just two minutes later, North received second and third penalty for crosschecking and elbowing, respectively.
Towards the end of the period, two South players swiftly weaved between North’s defense, which resulted in the first goal of the game.
The Tigers retaliated quickly, and the Lions received two penalties for hooking and tripping.
Seconds into the second period, junior Christian Cerone received a penalty for slashing, leaving a gap in North’s game.
South took advantage of the opportunity, scoring its second goal. The rest of the period went by quietly, as the puck flew between either ends of the rink.
Just before the third period started, North interrupted South’s defense, as senior Raymond Arthur and junior Gus Wallask scored in succession.
“Going into the game, I wished that I’d score and reduce as much in-zone time for South as possible,” said senior Raymond Arthur. “I also wanted to prove that a win against South wouldn’t be a fluke, but that it would show that we’re the better team.”
Soon after, North picked up their second penalty of the period, as junior Chase Umina received an extended penalty for unsportsmanly conduct.
As both teams were tied, the final period began with new intensity. North’s underclassmen stepped up as sophomore Jonah Goupil and freshman Joseph DiBona expertly skated down the ice to score a goal.
Goupil’s glory didn’t last long, though, as he was penalized three minutes later for tripping.
Two minutes before the final buzzer, junior Alex Fayerberg found an opportunity to shoot the puck, securing North’s victory.
The Tigers, 6-12-1, did not pursue post-season play.
