Boys’ track did not do as well as it hoped at the State Meet Tuesday, coming up 23 points when it expected more, according to senior Young Guang, a captain with senior Swardiq Mayanja.
The team was looking for a better performance, according to Guang. “We were in the hunt for the team title, but we were expecting somewhere around 34 points,” he said.
The meet was postponed twice, which resulted in some members of the team not being able to use the extra days of practice, according to Guang.
“The lack of proper training really showed in the running events,” he said. The team only scored one point in running events, that point coming from junior Ryan Lucken in the 400-meter.
Guang said the Tigers’ strength was in the field events, where they earned 22 out of 23 points. The field events have been the team’s strength for most of the year, according to Guang.
According to Guang, the team accomplished and surpassed its goals for the season. “This team really exceeded any expectations I had coming in,” he said. “We were wondering if we could even win the league this year.”
Guang said the highlights of the season were the Division I State Relays and the Division I Meet, while they struggled most at the tied meet at Weymouth.
Next year, although he won’t be on the team, Guang said he expects the Tigers to uphold their winning tradition.
“I’m sure coach Blackburn will come up with another state-caliber team next year, and I wish the team luck,” he said. “I want to thank the team for for an outstanding year, as well as our coaches and my fellow captains who did outstanding jobs as athletes and leaders.”
