The quick wit and humor of performers in Theater Ink’s Improv Jam, directed by seniors Jordan Andrews and James Sloan, left the audience uncontrollably laughing in the Little Theater, Thursday Feb. 26.
Performed by North’s Improv club, Improv Jam featured improv games in addition to scenes based on audience input. The show featured a variety of humorous skits, including various on-the-spot accent changes and quips.
According to sophomore Lana Conley, the cast played improv games in preparation for the show. “We mostly practiced how to play them, play them well, how to make things funny,” she said.
One issue that the cast anticipated was freezing on stage, according to Conley. However, performers were able to overcome this issue by supporting each other. “If you make a mistake then your other castmates can help you out,” said Conley.
Another strategy the cast used was removing the pressure to be funny all the time. “It doesn’t have to be a funny thing, it just has to be something to further the plot,” said freshman Carmen Ruelos.
Improv Jam is an audition-less production, and according to junior Ellison Pierre-Louis, performers improve significantly throughout the process. “You think you’re gonna be bad at it, then you actually do it, and then you’re like, ‘wow, I’m a lot better,’” Pierre-Louis said.
While directing, Andrews said “you kind of realize the inner workings of what improv is. Some people say the easiest way to learn something is to teach it,” she added.
