Gymnastics won the MIAA State Championship for the first time since 1972 after finishing its regular season undefeated for the third year in a row. The Tigers also set a school record at Sectionals with a score of 147.475.
According to head coach Cassie Ford, the team demonstrated depth throughout the regular and post-season.
Ford said, “Breaking our school record at Sectionals was something that made me really proud, because we go into this meet assuming that scores are going to be lower because it’s a tournament, so there’s more judges.”
The team saw guidance from senior captain Samantha Shu, as well as junior captains Simona Batista-Ciani and Greer Howard.
At Bay States, senior Nika Jayanth, Howard, and sophomores Lucia Grapski, Alana Dukakis, and Sela Yoon earned All-Star awards. Grapski broke the school record for individual scoring with a 9.85 on her floor routine, and Grapski and Howard also qualified individually for States.
Ford applauded Grapski’s achievements, saying, “She always has a really positive mindset. She is still a younger member of the team, but she’s always there supporting the other members and she’s really stepped up.”
Howard added that the team’s highest scoring events are typically vault and floor, which also tend to be very competitive.
“I think that beam was the proudest moment for me,” said Ford about Sectionals. “That’s definitely been an event that we struggled with this year, to stay on the beam.”
According to Ford, the Tigers’ dedication to the sport and to helping their teammates propelled them to earn their undefeated record this season.
Gymnastics blew the competition out of the water at the New England Championship, earning first place for the second year in a row with a new school record of 149.125.
