North community members learned about Asian cultures through singing, dancing, and other performances by students during Asian Culture Night, Saturday, April 28, in the auditorium. The annual event was organized by the Asian Culture Club (ACC).
“You have all of these students with different stories and experiences,” said senior Michael Lee, an organizer of the event. “And I think this night is for those students to share their stories and make minorities feel like their stories are important.”
Piano and singing duets, Chinese yo-yos, native Chinese dances, and performances from North’s acapella groups The Northern Lights and The Melocotones were all featured in the event.
Sophomore Johnny Poon said, “The main message was to spread all Asian cultures in the community and to show everyone that culture.”
After the event, food was offered to the audience members outside the auditorium. North families and different Asian restaurants in the Newton area including Rice Valley, Jumbo Seafood, Manow Thai Kitchen, and The Dumpling House donated food for the event.
“Everyone was really happy and the audience seemed to be into it,” said senior Sheil Mehta, another organizer.
