School plans to implement new gender neutral bathrooms

More gender neutral bathrooms will be created at North, possibly as soon as next September, as part of a recent effort by the Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA), Student Faculty Administration (SFA), and interim principal Mark Aronson.
According to Aronson, the new gender neutral bathrooms stem from a need for a “normalized” bathroom environment, which would not require a key unlike the only current gender neutral bathroom, located on the fourth floor.
“You can just come and go like any other student bathroom,” said Aronson.
Additionally, at least one of the proposed bathrooms will be located on the first floor, according to freshman Achille Ricca, a member of the GSA.
The initial idea to create more accessible gender neutral bathrooms was prompted by members of the GSA and SFA, according to Aronson.
“Students deserve the credit for pushing the conversation forwards because they are the ones who are coming to me and coming to others to talk about their needs,” he said.
Members of the SFA and GSA have also been talking to physical education department head Tom Giusti about creating gender neutral locker rooms, said Aronson.
Faculty was informed about the idea in an email sent last week. According to Aronson, some staff bathrooms, which are currently either male or female, may be relabeled as gender neutral as part of the school-wide campaign.
