North’s debate team was one of the 132 teams competing at The Lexington Winter Invitational, held at Lexington High School last weekend. They sent four teams of two people to argue if the United Nations peacekeepers should have the power to engage in offensive operations.
Senior Bill Shen and junior Edward Ding, team captains, had a record of 3-3, while the remaining three teams—juniors Peter Baronowski and Adam Rabinowitz, juniors David Reiss-Mello and Andrew Sun, and sophomores Jacob Sims Speyer and Lucy Zheng all went 1-5. None of the pairs advanced to the bracket round.
Sun said, “The tournament was pretty tough for us, but we’re going to work to get better.”
Baronowski explained that to win, “a judge watches the round and decides at the end who did a better job convincing them.”
The team will next compete against 93 teams at The Columbia Invitational, held at Columbia University in New York next weekend.
