Junior Nick Roberts made the pass for each of Ultimate Frisbee’s goals during the team’s 15-1 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury at Burr School yesterday.
Yes, you heard right: Roberts, a captain with seniors Eliot Bemis and Adam Kafka, delivered all eight goal-scoring passes in the first half, and then seven more in the second half.
“I realized after the second half started that I had thrown all the goals so far, but I didn’t think about it much after that,” he said.
Up 8-0 at halftime, the Tigers, 13-7, were already talking about clinching a “bagel,” Ultimate-speak for a shutout. However, the talk didn’t last long.
Lincoln-Sudbury was the first to get on the board in the second half, scoring after inching slowly, yet steadily to the goal line. However, Lincoln-Sudbury lost any momentum it had when a player dropped a pull, or throw-off, very close to his own goal line. The Tigers scored almost instantly, bringing the score to 10-1.
Sophomore Mac Hecht was a force to be reckoned with throughout the game. He didn’t give an inch on defense, and kept the offense moving. Coach Matt Anderson said, “Mac was a B-Team stand-out last year and has quickly taken leadership. He is also a natural handler.”
The Tigers also brought home the Amherst Invitational Tournament trophy Sunday, defeating Phillips Academy in the final game.
“The sweet irony was that the team we beat in the championship was a team that we lost to earlier in the Tournament, on Saturday,” Anderson said.
During the two-day tournament, the Tigers played three regulation-length games each day; that’s three times as much Ultimate per day as the team played yesterday. “It was a challange,” said Anderson, “but we came through.”
After such a long-winded, demanding tournament, the team could have used a quick blow-out, which was exactly what happened against Lincoln-Sudbury yesterday.
Tomorrow, the team will travel to Masconomet for what Anderson said should be a much more challenging game. “Their team is very in-shape,” he said.
