Girls' cross country beats Natick, Milton to kick off its season

by Ryan Condon
Beating Natick 22-40 and Milton by a perfect score of 15-50, girls’ cross country, 2-0, kicked off its season well in a combined meet Wednesday, according to senior Caroline Loftus, a captain with seniors Meghan Bellerose, Julia Schlossman and Kaylee Spitaels.
“The meet went really well,” said Schlossman. “For many runners, it was their first 5k race and the first time seeing our home course.”
Sophomore Sonya Jampel placed first, according to coach Brandon Mogayzel, with Bellerose, Spitaels and junior Maeve Greely all finishing in the top five. Jampel finished in under twenty minutes with a time of 19:49 “which is an accomplishment on our course,” according to Mogayzel.
Mogayzel said the team’s toughest competition this year will be Weymouth and Brookline. “Based on last year, those two teams should be very good,” he said.
This year’s team is exceptionally talented, according to Mogayzel. “This team should be stronger than last year’s from the top all the way down. We have a strong front pack, depth in the middle, talented new members and improved returning members,” he said.
Loftus said she is confident in this year’s squad. “With almost 50 members, the team looks very strong,” she said. “Our training is effective, and it shows. Everyone is enthusiastic and motivated to improve.”
