Girls’ hockey secured a thrilling 2-0 win against Brookline Saturday, Feb. 8 at home while demonstrating impressive determination during the annual senior night game.
“It was a big win, mostly because we wanted to win for the seniors,” said head coach Rebecca Fleming. “Also, it’s a big win towards making the tournament so it was a huge success”.
In the first period, the Newton Crush came out strong, keeping the puck in Brookline’s defensive zone and making tons of shots on Brookline’s net.
“We did a great job coming out with a ton of energy, and we put pressure on them really early which helped us get the win in the end,” said senior Ellie Fahey, a captain along with senior Mady Daley.
The Crush came off strong only a few minutes into the first period, with South freshman Gabby Staz scoring off of an assist by North junior Audrey Welstead and South junior Ollie Rice.
Keeping this momentum going, Crush consistently passed and put shots on net, causing North freshman Malin Vardeh to extend the Crush’s lead to 2-0 with a goal midway through the period.
“I thought we came out ready to go and kept up the intensity because sometimes we can be inconsistent, but we were more consistent today, ” said Fleming. “We did a little bit more of executing in terms of having our heads up and making plays.”
The second period began and the Crush was struggling to keep the puck out of its zone, but was ultimately able to push through and maintain the 2-0 score.
The Crush came out with grit and determination during the third period to secure the win for the seniors.
“Overall, I thought everyone played well. Sometimes we struggle with consistency, but I thought we were really strong and didn’t give up the whole game,” said Daley. “We pretty much dominated them in all three periods.”
Newton, 9-8-1, fell to Weymouth Wednesday, Feb. 12 at John A. Ryan Arena.
