Girls’ volleyball conquered Brookline 3-1 with a vicious comeback Thursday, Sept. 12 in the Reggie gymnasium. The former state champions continue their undefeated streak despite drastic roster changes as a result of the Class of 2024’s graduation.
“I think we’re adapting really well,” said Nile Fox, the head coach. “I’ve been trying a bunch of different lineups and I’m not sure what the lineup is going to be, but we got options.”
The team struggled to find its footing as the first set kicked off. Fighting to keep up their defensive play, North found themselves trailing 12 points behind Brookline. As Brookline held up a serving streak of 10 points, the Tigers found their momentum and energy sinking.
North eventually lost the set 25-11.
“We had to hit more consistently and be more consistent in general,” said senior Devon Burke, a captain along with senior Alexa Marucci. “We could’ve done better.”
In the next three sets, North stepped up. Kill by kill, Burke and senior Brianna Milliken brought the energy needed to keep the Tigers in the running. North came through with a powerful turnaround, dominating the next three sets and shutting down Brookline’s efforts.
According to Fox, Burke’s drive to win is crucial to the success of the team. “It really rubs off on the rest of the players,” he said.
As girls’ volleyball works towards reaching another state championship, they will maintain high standards, according to Burke. Following their Brookline game, the Tigers defeated North Quincy, Braintree, and Needham. They will play Framingham Friday, Sept. 20 at home.
