Boys' soccer loses to Wellesley

Boys’ soccer practices at the Lowell fields.

Boys’ soccer loss to Wellesley 4-2 on Tuesday at home. “We play in a league that is pretty difficult,” said special education teacher Roy Dow, the head coach. “Games are decided on mistakes and we made a couple more mistakes than them and they took advantage.”

North started off strong, scoring an early goal when senior John Shore chipped the ball over the head of Wellesley’s goalie. But North’s early success did not last long. The Tigers struggled to keep the ball out of their end, which led to many scoring chances for Wellesley. Freshman Henry Baker, North’s goalie, made several key defensive stops.

Eventually, North’s inability to clear the ball out of their zone caught up to them, and Wellesley scored off a corner kick in the first half. Wellesley’s offense did not stop there and scored again later in the first half.

In the second half, North picked up where they left off, struggling to push the ball into Wellesley territory. However, North began to turn the tide midway through the second half. The Tigers almost scored off a bicycle kick by senior Van Sisson, but the ball missed high. North had several other scoring chances but missed high or wide of the net.

“It took us a little too long to realize what we were having success at, which was playing to our forwards and getting after them quicker,” said Dow

Later in the half, Wellesley scored off of a penalty quick. Soon after, another North turnover proved costly after Wellesley intercepted a North pass to take a 4-1 lead.

Junior Jay Sharma scored a garbage-time goal with under a minute left in the game.

According to Dow, there were some positive takeaways from the game. The team responds well to coaching points,” he said. “When we ask stuff from them they usually do their best to do it.”

Dow added, “If we can start to string to minutes together, halves together, games together instead of ten-fifteen minute spells we will be alright.”
