Girls’ hockey tied Brookline, 2-2, on Thursday night at the Watertown Rink. “Even though the long break hurt us a little bit, we played really well,” said Beals dean Scott Heslin, the head coach.

Neither team was able to score in the first period. “We were just trying to get back into a game focus,” said Heslin.

Brookline scored the first goal of the game in the second period, but junior Lydia Mastroianni scored minutes later on an assist from senior Abigail Dobies. “Lydia had a really positive impact on our team in the game because of not only her visible contributions but also the energy she brings to the team,” said senior Emma McKee, a captain.

South senior Caroline Pratt scored a goal in the third period to take a 2-1 lead. However, Brookline scored 30 seconds later to tie the game. “We did a better job of communicating in the second period,” said McKee.

Newton, 2-2-1, was unable to score another goal to retake the lead, resulting in their first tie of the season.

According to Heslin, freshman Camille Kouroriez, the starting goalie, played a critical role in keeping Brookline from scoring. “She played great the whole game, and the only time when they scored was on breakdowns.”

Newton will host Waltham on Monday at 4 p.m. in the Watertown Rink.
