Science team places third in competition

by Alex Feit
This school’s science team placed third out of 15 participants at the West Suburban Science League (WSSL) competition at Bedford Thursday, according to senior Zachary Rosenof, a captain for the team’s WSSL meets.

The meet was comprised of four different events: Mystery Architecture, which involved competitors building structures out of random materials; Forestry, which involved a test about trees; Gravity Vehicle, in which participants attempted to build a car which would stop on a ramp at distance only assigned at the competition; and Disease Detectives, in which competitors were quizzed on their knowledge of the spread of diseases. The team was split into four groups to compete in these events, and the points from each event were added up to yield a composite score in the competition, Rosenof said.

The team finished one point behind Acton-Boxboro and Chelmsford, which tied for first, he said.

However, the group comprised of freshmen Katherine Gao and Amy Huang, sophomore Gina Hsu and junior Eliana Gevelber placed first in the Forestry competition, Rosenof said.

Overall, Rosenof said that although the group performed very well, he said that they could have performed even better if they had practiced more.

“It’s really just about more preparation,” Rosenof said. “Right now, we’re doing pretty well with preparing, but if we want to do better, there is still room for more.”

Science Team will participate Sunday, Jan. 15 in the January WSSL at Lowell.
