Boys’ volleyball, ranked second in the state, secured a commanding victory over Milton Thursday, May 1 in the Reggie gym, winning the first three sets in under an hour. Despite the smooth win, team members hoped to play better next time, according to head coach Nile Fox.
“I think we could have played way better, but I’m proud of the win,” said Fox.
North maintained a significant lead throughout all three sets, winning the first by nine points, the second by ten, and the third by fifteen. JV head coach Palmer Osias said that blocking helped the Tigers rack up points.
“I was proud of the blocks,” said Osias. “They got up, and they got over the net, making sure that no balls went over.”
Osias added that effective communication also played a key role. “We were really talking to each other, moving around a lot on the court,” said Osias.
Senior Brady Dwyer, a captain along with seniors Paul Nelson and Simon Vardeh, highlighted junior Amaris Cotto’s improvement.
“He got a bad set, but he still hit the ball really well, which I’m happy about,” said Dwyer. “We’re trying to work with him to hit the ball more and I think he’s been doing a really good job. I’m proud of him.”
There were a few fumbles throughout the game–some serves into the net, missed hits, and some failed connections–which Dwyer attributed to decreased energy levels.
“I think our energy was low at times which affected our level of playing,” said Dwyer. “Typically against teams that aren’t super highly ranked, we don’t play our best game.”
According to Fox, Milton’s effort stood out.
“I think Milton showed up today,” said Fox. “They played hard. They came to play against us.”
Fox added that the boys’ volleyball team will return to the gym to continue improving.
“We’ll be back in the gym trying to get better tomorrow.”
