Boys’ gymnastics defeated Braintree 175.3-134.1 at Braintree High School last Wednesday night.¨No matter what time it is, no matter what meet, we always put out 100 percent of our effort and we never give it a rest,¨ said senior Micheal Mitelman, a captain with senior Steven Tan, South senior Sam Arber, and junior Jake Forbes.
Newton took an early lead with two competitors scoring above a 9.0 on floor. Arber and sophomore Matthew Hassan scored a 9.0 and 9.4, respectively.
On the pommel horse, all four Newton gymnasts scored higher than Braintree’s top scorer, senior Colin Babineau. Arber scored the highest on the event with a 8.2, and Mitelman followed with a 6.8.
North won the high bar and parallel bars as well, scoring 28.3 points on each event. On vault, North beat Braintree by another 12.5 points.
According to head coach Bill Martin, his main goal was ¨hitting each routine. You would like to have six guys hit every routine. You want to go six to six.¨
With everyone from Newton scoring above 6.0 on the rings, Newton was able to gain even more distance from Braintree, leading to a blowout victory.
Despite competing in the gym at a temperature of 57 degrees fahrenheit, ¨the guys stepped up in a difficult situation and performed the way they did,¨ said Martin.
Newton, 7-0, will host Lowell on Monday at 5 p.m. in the SOA.
