Girls swim and dive defeated Framingham 96-88 Tuesday, Oct. 1 at home, showcasing a broad range of talent throughout the meet.
“They did a great job in being flexible in changing the lineup,” said Kristen Smith, the head coach and PEHW teacher. “It was an opportunity to see some people from different events to try to get time for our conference meeting, which I think is like three weeks away.”
Although the team was down halfway through the meet, they were able to bring back some lost momentum due to last-minute strategic changes. Senior Parker DeVeau, called upon at the last minute, stepped in for the 100m backstroke and secured a crucial second-place finish, earning precious points for the team.
According to senior Kate Urdaneta, a captain along with seniors Meredith Burwell and Sana Takamatsu, the team’s increased focus on mindset was key to the Tigers coming out on top.
“I think the team was really positive. We have these new positivity buddies that we give pep talks to and make sure they are positive going into and out of the races, because the mental part of swimming is one of the most important parts,” said Urdaneta.
The Tigers saw some major individual and relay victories in their times. Freshman Barbara Liao qualified for states with her win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.30. Junior Jill Schneider also came in first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.22.
“I kicked and pulled with everything I had to push myself to the end of the lane,” said Schneider.
“Once I reached that point, I glanced around, saw who was near me, and used it as fuel to swim even faster back down.”
In the 200 freestyle relay, seniors Julia Kammer, Gabriella Urdaneta, Kate Urdaneta, and freshman Barbara Liao claimed first place with a time of 1:48.30.
“It felt great to beat Framingham,” said Schneider. “A lot of people stepped up, we had a lot of strong swims, and it was fun.”
The team, 4-3, will plaed Natick at home, Tuesday, Oct.8.
