Field hockey triumphed over Weymouth with an assertive 8-0 victory Thursday, Oct. 24. The decisive win came on the Tigers’ senior night, where graduating members of the team were celebrated for their contributions.
Senior Meghan Devaney, a defensive player, switched positions with usual goalie senior Izzy Lubbe-Lynch to grant her an opportunity to play center-forward. According to PEHW teacher Lauren Baugher, the head coach, Lubbe-Lynch had been looking forward to a chance to play on the field all season.
“They both switched gears, and it was really funny and super cool that Meghan would be willing to do that for her teammate,” said Baugher. “It’s what our team is about, people doing whatever the team needs.”
The first quarter started off strong for the Tigers. Within the first two minutes, they earned an offensive corner against Weymouth, with senior Samantha Lao inserting. Just a minute later, senior Karina Polnarev scored the first goal.
Two more corners were called in the next five minutes, giving North countless scoring opportunities. Polnarev seized another chance, scoring with an assist from senior Marina Guzzi.
Freshman Willa Hanson scored within the last minute of the first quarter, securing the sweet 3-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Tigers kept up their relentless offense with senior Gemma Gow scoring her first goal of the season and Polnarev completing a hat-trick, assisted by Lubbe-Lynch.
“Karina’s hat-trick and everyone scoring was a team effort really as every score had an assist and it was great,” said senior Maddie Ryan, a captain along with senior Macy Goodwin.
The sixth goal of the game was scored by junior Roxanne Feldman. During the third quarter, senior Macy Goodwin, a captain alongside Ryan, scored off of Weymouth’s goalie pads, assisted by Lubbe-Lynch.
“My favorite part of the of the game teamwise was being able to celebrate all the seniors and come together”, said Lubbe-Lynch.
Senior Beckett Houston scored the last goal of the game, marking the final 8-0 score before the entire varsity bench subbed in to play different positions for the last half of the fourth quarter.
“The game went well. It was a nice way to end the regular season because we were able to get all the players in the game,” said Baugher. “The seniors had different opportunities to play together which rarely happens. It was nice to end the regular season with an eight-zero victory.”
