Boys’ wrestling took part in the Division 1 Central Sectional Playoffs Saturday Feb. 14, finishing fifth out of the 12 teams at the meet. The team had four wrestlers qualify for the State meet, with an additional two as reserves.
In order to qualify, wrestlers had to finish in the top four of their weight class, with those finishing fifth as the reserves for States.
States will be held next Friday and Saturday at Weymouth. According to senior Max Long, co-captain with senior Joe Arcuri, having four Tigers qualify was a “huge success” for the team.
Long also said that the team had “a lot of young wrestlers who really stepped up” in addition to a “core group of guys that really helped make this season the success it was.”
Arcuri, Long, junior Brandon Altieri, and freshman Michael Mariano finished second, second, fourth, and fourth, in the 126, 138, 132, and 120 pound weight classes, respectively. Junior Tristan Gubert and freshman Nathaniel Beatrice, The Tigers’ reserves for the State meet,  finished fifth in the 145 and 113 pound classes.
According to coach John Staulo, “hard work is the key” for the team, and the Tigers need to “continue what they’re doing” next week.
Similarly, Long said that the team has “worked really hard this season,” and that “it showed at Sectionals and it will show at States as well.”
The Tigers finished the season at 13-5, and Staulo commended what the team was able to accomplish already.
He said that this season was “one of the better ones in a while,” and that although the Tigers may be “young, inexperienced, and undersized” compared to many teams, they were always able to “overcome all of the obstacles.”
