Mentors in Violence Prevent raises awareness

by Douglas Abrams

Mentors in Violence Prevention club (MVP) held an X-block meeting yesterday in the Library Learning Commons to raise awareness about gender stereotypes, bullying and sexual harassment.

During the meeting, club members presented two power points and several video clips and held a discussion, according to senior Emily Schacter, who is an officer of the club along with seniors Alessandra Denaro, Veronica Ingham and Alyssa Kaplan.

“I hope that people gained awareness from the meeting about common male and female stereotypes, including that men are supposed to be strong and that women are supposed to be homemakers,” Schacter said.

“I think the meeting was pretty successful, although only about 20 to 25 people showed up. We got about 100 new people to sign up on the email list, so that is a start,” she said.

According to Schacter, in recent years, students have forgotten about the club. “We want to let people know that the club is still around,” she said.

In the future, Schacter says that the club hopes to have a Mentors in Violence Prevention day, but because the club is largely student run, organizing the day is difficult.

According to Kaplan, in the past, the club has had days devoted to raising awareness about violence prevention.

As a whole, the X-block meeting was a success, according to Schacter.

“I feel that we accomplished our goal and got the word out about the club and raised awareness about gender stereotyping,” she said.
