Wrestling beats Brookline in last match of season

by Adam Rabinowitz

Wrestling, 11-10, beat Brookline at home 42-18 Wednesday in a very good match, according to coach John Staulo.

“The match went well,” said Staulo. “It was good to finish off the season with a win and a winning record.”

Staulo said that although the Tigers won, the match was close. “The match could have gone either way. Both teams fought hard, and if we had made a few mistakes, we could have lost,” he said.

According to Staulo, this match was the last home match for the team’s seniors and the team had a tribute for them during the match.

Nick Mariano had a pin in this match, reaching 100 wins for his career in Newton North, according to the Newton Tab.  Mariano is the sixth wrestler for this school to achieve this feat, according to the Tab.

The team also competed in a meet Saturday, Feb. 2, against Watertown, Concord Carlisle and Waltham, where it performed well, according to Staulo.

“We beat Waltham and Concord Carlisle, and almost beat Watertown as well. We were very close to coming out of that quad meet perfectly,” he said.

The team will compete in Division I sectionals Saturday Feb. 9 at Newton South. According to Staulo, 12-13 teams make it to sectionals, while only four to five make it to All-States.
