Wrestling battles injuries, looks towards postseason

by Adam Rabinowitz

Wrestling, 10-9-1, has been having a good season, according to senior Scott MacDonald, a captain with senior Alex Cuccurullo.

The team, who just secured a winning record with their match against Brookline last Wednesday, has one match left this season against Natick Wednesday.

According to coach John Staulo, a win against Natick would be big for the team.

“Whenever we face Natick it is exciting. They are a tough team and we know they will give us their best. We need to do the same,” said Staulo.

Staulo added that with a demanding sport such as wrestling, the lineups adjust constantly.

“There have been a lot of changes. If we stay healthy, then it’s all good, but that hasn’t been the case,” he said.

According to Staulo, the team is struggling to keep a consistent lineup for every match.

“We don’t have a big enough lineup. We started out big but with a lot of concussions, the size has shrunk,” said Staulo.

Staulo also said that because of the many injuries this year, the team did not attend the Coaches Invitational Saturday, Feb. 8.

According to Staulo, some of the new wrestlers this year have been doing well.

“They have all put in a great effort, and some of them get it quicker than others,” he said.

MacDonald added that freshmen Anthony DiRusso, Teddy Lewis, and Connor Nichols have all been good this year, and that Lewis has surprised him in the level that he has been wrestling.

The postseason begins next Saturday with Sectionals at South, followed by Division I States and All States the next two weekends in Lawrence and Lowell, respectively.

Staulo added that heading into the postseason, he really can’t tell what to expect.

“The postseason is really hard to predict. Some weight classes are full of great wrestlers, and others aren’t,” he said.

He also added that it’s impossible to know who will be there until the actual meet.

“Because of injuries and illnesses, you will never know your opponent until the meet, and you just have to hope for the best,” he said.

MacDonald said that he has high hopes for the postseason.

“I would like to go to New Englands,” he said.
