North welcomes new faculty amid remote learning plan

Carrie Bates
Science teacher

Background: Bates earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry education and a minor in Spanish teaching from Brigham Young University.
Excited about… “trying new ways to learn with students in a virtual setting. I also look forward to hopefully being in person soon!”
Fun fact(s): Bates enjoys hiking, running, baking pies, crocheting, and country swing dancing.

Michael Bono
Science teacher

Background: Bono earned his bachelor’s degree from Sacred Heart University in biology, his master’s in microbiology and physical therapy from the University of Rhode Island, and his Transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of South Dakota.
Excited about…“meeting my students (albeit remotely) and sharing my passion for and curiosity about biology with them.”   
Fun fact(s): Bono lived inSeattle, WA for 11 years with his husband and they explored the Pacific Northwest together.

Emily Bozeman
Special Education teacher

Background: Bozeman earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University in English and philosophy and her master’s in education from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Excited about… “all the intensive learning we will do at all levels to support students, families and one another through our current circumstances.”
Fun fact(s): Bozeman enjoys chasing her boisterous two year old son, Alister, as well as reading any dystopian fiction she can find. She was also Boston Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 2012.

Christine Choate
Special Education teacher

Background: Choate earned her bachelor’s degree from Wheelock College in social work and her master’s in social work from Boston University. 
Excited about… “being a part of the NNHS community and getting to know the faculty, students and families.”
Fun fact(s): Choate taught at NNHS from 1999-2008 in the Pilot Program and is glad to be back!

David Jackson, Jr.
Math teacher

Background: Jackson earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College in mathematical economics and dance. 
Excited about… “teaching my students, on all levels, through the field of mathematics.”
Fun fact(s): Jackson enjoys football, traveling, and cooking. Also, he’s lived in the United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic.

Kathy Lopes

Background: Lopes earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in sociology and political science and her master’s in social work from Simmons College.  
Excited about… “being a part of a community that is committed to making North a welcoming place for ALL students.”
Fun fact(s): Lopes loves being physically active and traveling to new places. She also lived in Washington, DC for five years before moving back home to Boston.

Jenny Morreale
English teacher

Background: Morreale earned her bachelor’s degree in English from The College of Staten Island and is currently finishing her master’s in secondary education.
Excited about… “getting to know my students! And for us to navigate this new world of virtual learning together.”
Fun fact(s): Morreale is from New York City and her favorite football team is the New York Giants.

Melissa Perez
Math teacher

Background: Perez earned her bachelor’s degree from Boston University.
Excited about… “getting to work with the math department again. It’s such a collaborative group.”
Fun fact(s): Perez likes to do indoor rock climbing.

Laurie Paul
Special Education teacher

Background: Paul earned her master’s degree and Education Specialist degree in school psychology from Tufts University.
Excited about… “being part of a school community that prioritizes antiracist teaching frameworks and flexible learning environments for students.”
Fun fact(s): Paul was born in Haiti and came to America when she was 4 with her family.

Khari Roulhac
Dean of Adams House

Background: Roulhac earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and his master’s in education from Fitchburg State University.
Excited about… “meeting students and helping them to accomplish their goals.”
Fun fact(s): Roulhac is a former METCO student. He graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School in 1994.

Alex Shames
Science teacher

Background: Shames earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology and biochemistry and a minor in East Asian Studies from Wesleyan University. 
Excited about… “delving back into chemistry as a subject and the challenge of connecting with students over Zoom. This will be a crazy year for sure and I think if we approach it with some flexibility and humor we can all try to make the best of it.”
Fun fact(s): Shames was once in a TikTok video that ended up getting 70,000 views. Any of his students who can find that video will get 10 extra credit points.

Andrew Spear
Business teacher

Background: Spear earned his bachelor’s degree in science and finance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and his master’s from Northeastern University in business administration. He also earned a master’s in education from Lesley University.
Excited about… “Newton North’s ambitious commitment to hold a high academic and professional bar for both students and faculty, even in the face of distance learning challenges, and while actively dismantling social inequities in our community and broader society. The challenges are real, but our goals are set high. I am confident this year will be a great one!”
Fun fact(s): Spear ran the Boston Marathon 3 times.

Michelle Widener
Math

Background: Widener earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and her master’s in education from the University of Southern California. She is currently working on her master’s in sciences in mathematics teaching at the University of New Hampshire.
Excited about… “watching students engage in mathematics in creative and unexpected ways.”
Fun fact(s): Widener enjoys Dungeons and Dragons, gardening, reading Star Wars novels, cross-stitching, cooking, and running.
