Mock Trial wins at the Garden City Invitational competition

North’s Mock Trial team won this year’s Garden City Invitational competition Oct. 22 and 23 at South, the fourth consecutive win for the team.
Competing against South, Brookline, Boston Latin School and Winsor, North represented the defense in a case about negligent hosts of a party, said senior Grace Choi, a captain of the team.
“We came in very prepared,” said junior Ilai Gavish, another captain of the team, about the victory.
Though the Garden City competition is pre-season and does not determine placement for the season, Choi said the win is “an indication that we have some good new-comers.” According to Gavish, “the new members brought energy,” which helped the team do well.
According to Choi, the winner of the competition is not determined by the actual verdict of the case. Rather, each member of the team receives a score out of ten on their presentation, and the team with the highest final score wins the competition.
Before the trial, team members are assigned roles and prepare for the case, said Choi. The trail is modeled after real court and follows the same proceedings, according to sophomore Jeannette Hurwitz. After all the evidence is presented, judges decide the verdict of the case and the team’s points, said Hurwitz.
