Girls’ gymnastics defeated Natick 133.5-133.35 in a close meet in the SOA last Tuesday, Jan. 14.

“This was truly a team effort today.” said head coach Jessica Morrison, “We knew that the Natick meet was going to be a very close one just looking at their previous scores.”

Tensions were high throughout the meet, with the two teams always being within a point of each other.

Morrison added, “We reminded the girls that they just needed to stay focused on one skill at a time, to make those minor adjustments with straight legs and pointed toes, and to leave it all out there, and they did.”

Natick’s sophomore Alexa Cohen lead on the vault, scoring a 9.0. However, sophomore Sivan Danziger’s 8.7 kept the score close at 33.05-32.4 Natick heading into the bars.

On bars, North closed in on Natick’s lead with senior Izzy Day, a captain along with senior Heidi Matt, scoring an 8.6. After picking up half a point North found itself down only 65.55-65.4.

Natick squeezed out a victory on the beam with a 33.8-33.6 win to expand their lead to 0.3. Again, Danziger led the entire meet with a score of 9.1.

“She had one of her better meets today for sure,” Morrison said. “She did exceptional on beam and floor.”

The meet came down to the final event—floor. North, who had been behind for the entire meet needed to win the event by more than 0.3 in order to secure the victory The Tigers did just that with three of their players scoring over 8.5. They won the event 34.5-34 and won the meet by just .15.

“Floor is usually one of our strong suits,” said Morrison. “But today the girls really hit the floor and not only were they doing the skills, but they were doing all the little things that judges look for.”

Going forward, today represents “a big self-esteem booster for a lot of the girls or saying we can go one-on-one,” according to Morrison.
