Regardless of the lack of snow over the past several weeks, alpine skiing, has been making steady progress in individuals’ performances, according to senior Parker Veroff, a captain with senior Katie Regan.

“A lot more points are being scored, and all-in-all, everyone has been skiing much stronger than in previous years,” Veroff said.

So far, in the Mass Bay Ski League East standings for boys, junior Mark Vrahas is placing as the top North skiier in 16th place with 64 points overall. Other skiiers in the standings include Veroff in 30th place with 33 points, sophomore Freddie Pierce in 50th place with three points and sophomore Josh Gluck in 51st with one point.

In the girls’ standings, Regan is in 25th place with 47 points, sophomore Julie Chan in 28th with 45 points, sophomore Lee Moriarity in 44th with 14 points, senior Brooke Gladstone in 50th with seven points and sophomore Lee Guekguezian in 57th with two points.

Although Veroff said that there have not been many highlights in competitions because there have only been two meets, he said that alpine skiing has become “more of a legitimate team,” since previous years.

“We have stronger group dynamics formed and have become a lot closer throughout these past few months. Besides that, though, everyone really seems to want to do well.”

Still, practice has sometimes been something lacking, whether it’s due to lack of snow or simply an inability to practice enough at times for meets .

“It is hard to go up against teams that get in more practice than we get. Practice really does make perfect.”

The recent death of a high school skier at a meet in Shrewsbury at which this school was competing is also “still on everyone’s minds,” Veroff said.

Either way, the goal for the team is still to “send as many people to States as possible,” he said.

Alpine will be competing next week at Ski Ward in Shrewsbury next Thursday.
