Girls' volleyball, 17-1, advances to MIAA semi-finals

by Gloria Li
Yesterday, the Tigers, 17-1, beat Somerville 3-0 at home during the semi-finals qualification round of the MIAA State Tournament.
They scored 12 consecutive points due to junior Keane Brazda’s, the setter, serving during the first game. Somerville was unable to catch up until the Tigers missed a return. Even so, the Tigers scored 25 to the 8 during the first game.

According to coach Richard Barton, “We haven’t played for 13 days, and the only thing that’s really happened was the scrimmaging against Medford Saturday, but everything that’s coming up will be important.”

Someone who especially surprised Barton with her performance was sophomore Emma Kaloupek, a left-side player.

“At practice, she never hit like she did during this game,” Barton said.

The Tigers also claimed victories during the second and third games with scores of 25 to nine and 25 to 11, respectively.

At home, the Tigers will host Quincy Thursday for the finals qualification round. Last year, the Tigers did not make it to the semi-finals.

Senior Laurie Kamenetsky, a captain, said, “We’re excited to be going to the next round.”
