Girls’ soccer defeated Walpole 5-1 on Thursday, Oct. 9 at home on the Lowell Ave field.
North ended the second half down 0-1, but the team made a remarkable comeback with five clutch goals in the second half.
Senior Shiaowei Qu, a captain alongside seniors Eva Hautefeuille and Colleen Walsh, said, “We’ve been training really hard and I think that today was the day where it really just clicked.”
Walpole started with possession of the ball, but the Tigers were quick to steal it and drive it up the field into Walpole’s territory.
After North’s explosive start, Walpole kept the ball in the Tigers’ half for the first seven minutes until head coach Brian Leighton called a timeout.
Right as the first half ended, sophomore Annabelle Wardly, goalie, performed an impressive dive to catch a fast ball, successfully blocking the ball from finding the back of the net.
In the second half, the Tigers exploded down the field once more. Sophomore Emily Sloan gave Hautefeuille a through pass to put her into scoring position, and Hautefeuille triumphantly evened out the score to 1-1.
Only a few minutes later, Hautefeuille headed the ball over defenders and into scoring position for North. Junior Campbell Demont struck the ball into the goal and put North in a 2-1 lead.
The team continued to display solid collaboration with its passes, allowing the Tigers to control the flow of the game and work the ball up the field.
Building on the Tigers’ momentum, senior Zoe Antebi skillfully shot the ball into the net, resulting in a 3-1 score.
Almost immediately after, junior Skye Larson launched the ball from outside the right side of the box that soared into the top of the net for a beautiful 4-1 lead.
Qu then drove up the left side of the field and executed a cross to sophomore Lauren Rhee for a tap-in, bringing the score to 5-1.
Once the final whistle blew, every one of the Tigers ran to congratulate their teammates on an amazing game.
According to Hautefeuille, she typically holds midfield but played center forward in the game for the first time. “I scored my first goal of the season and got three assists,” she said. “I’m really happy that I was able to add to the score line and help my team out.”
Head coach Brian Leighton added, “It’s just been an accumulation of work on a lot of different things like possession of the ball, controlling the game, confidence, and capitalizing on our scoring opportunities.”
The team, 2-4-6, fell to Central Catholic Saturday, Oct. 11 and Natick Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Tigers will face Framingham Thursday, Oct. 16 at home.
