North’s athletic department drummed up enthusiasm for the spring sports season while celebrating successes of the winter season, at the pep rally in the Reggie Gym, Tuesday, April. 15.
“The point of these rallies is to inform students while also having some fun,” said athletic director Mike Jackson.
The rally opened with the student announcers, seniors Skylar Boggs and Brendan Conroy, captains of the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams. They introduced North’s winter sports teams, alpine and nordic ski, boys swim, dance, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys indoor track, gymnastics, hockey, and wrestling.
Winter teams had record-breaking seasons this year according to Jackson, with girls gymnastics winning a New England title, boys’ and girls’ indoor track winning state titles, dance team finishing third in the state, and boys basketball falling to Franklin in the state finals.
“The pep rally was a nice well-attended, spirited event celebrating and congratulating each winter team,” said campus aide and wrestling coach, John Staulo.
Students and staff paused announcements to compete in a scooter relay race and an inflatable costume relay race, featuring inflatable unicorn and frog costumes. Spanish teacher Shaniece Rojas and English teacher Sarah Kieval won the costume relay, and a team of juniors won the scooter relay in a tight race against a team of seniors.
Following the races, Boggs and Conroy encountered fellow classmates to attend upcoming spring sports games for baseball, golf, boys and girls lacrosse, outdoor track, softball, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls ultimate, unified track, and boys volleyball.
“I am excited for the spring season because I get to be with my friends and spend my last moments with them before graduating,” said Boggs
Jackson drew raffle tickets to reveal the two student winners, senior Tarene Cunningham who won a JBL Extreme three speaker and sophomore Gerson Villavicencio who won a $50 Chipotle gift card. Two staff members, inclusion facilitator Steve Jamele, and teaching assistant Nina Waldeck won Amazon gift cards as raffle prizes.
