Green Team held a Prom Dress Donation Drive at the Theater Entrance March 20-23 two hours before The Prom, this year’s spring musical, ran each day.
The donation drive, organized by the Green Team, which works to make North more sustainable, allowed students from North and local colleges to donate their old prom dresses and suits in an attempt to make promwear more affordable.
Senior Ella Chen, a Green Team club officer, said, “We hope that we get a lot of dresses that aren’t in use.” According to Chen, dresses for junior and senior prom often cost over $100, so the Green Team hosted the donation drive to make prom more equitable for all students.
The dresses will be displayed for students to browse and purchase for $10 to $20 from late March to early April, according to Spanish teacher Denise Cremin, faculty advisor of the Green Team.
“The idea was to do it in collaboration with Theatre Ink because they’re having a musical called The Prom,” said senior Meera Parekh, a Green Team club officer.
Cremin added that Theatre Ink will donate the prom gowns they received as costumes for The Prom to the Green Team for juniors and seniors to browse after the musical is over. “We are hoping that people who are going to attend the musical will bring their old prom gowns or formal gowns and drop them off,” said Cremin.
In addition to providing discounted formalwear, the donation drive raised money for the Green Team and the upcoming Sustainability Day, according to Cremin.
“The Green Team’s purpose overall is just to find ways to make North more sustainable and promote education on sustainability,” said Parekh.
