Students learn about environmental conservation at Sustainability Day, led by the Newton North Green Team
Students on the Green Team taught their peers about ways to support a healthy environment during Sustainability Day during f-block Tuesday, Nov. 26 on Main Street.
“We are trying to share about our initiative for the Newton North Green Team. It is a fairly small club right now, but we are hoping to get more people interested in it,” said freshman Linnea Dun Rappaport, a member of the Green Team.
This sustainability day was a preview to what is coming this spring.
“It was a good time for us to try out either events or tables that people like, and then we can bring those back to the more Earth day related one,” said Amelia May, Green Team teacher.
The displays featured information about the (RAD) Cycling Club and Wildlife Photography Club, two groups represented at Sustainability Day.
“As the ride, advocate, and delve (RAD) Cycling club, we were invited to represent our club at Sustainability Day because, of course, a bike is a highly sustainable vehicle that is as good for the environment as it is for the rider. We also expect to collaborate with the Green Team on advocacy projects for all bikers and their safety,” said freshman Maddie Bourque, a member of the Cycling Club.
Looking forward, in addition to the two clubs, even more groups will be included.
“Something that we’re trying to do more this year is as well as having vendors come in and host tables, we want sustainability related clubs of students to also host tables. So cycling club, I also help run ocean buddies. We have a sustainable projects. There are classes in sustainability. So we’re inviting all of those students to get involved this year as well,” said May.
The event also featured a thrift swap, which started Monday, Nov. 18.
“Some of the things we did on the first day in November, the clothing swap was really popular,” said May.
