Boys’ swim and dive fell to Belmont 77-109 Friday, Jan. 24 at home while demonstrating inspiring team spirit in honor of senior night.
“We wanted to finish the season strong is what it all comes down to, and have some really good showings,” said counselor Patrick Manning, the head coach. “Our divers especially came out to win.”
Although pressure was high, the team hit the ground running with beautiful dives from senior Clarence De Medeiros, a captain along with seniors Jan Shek and Cody Wong.
On his first dive, a forward dive with 11/2 somersaults in a pike position, de Medeiros scored three 8s across the board. He continued to impress the judges by scoring 302.3 total points, twice the amount of any other diver at the meet.
Belmont took an early lead in the 200 yard medley relay, but the Tigers came back determined in the 50 yard freestyle with juniors Zach Levinsky and Aidan Furlong, as well as de Medeiros’ performances resulting in an 8-8 tie with Belmont.
After the 50 yard freestyle, Manning gave a heartwarming speech to the graduating seniors on the team, which included seniors Selene Tran, Meredith Burwell, and Basmala Abdelhakim, the team managers, along with seniors Shek, Wong, Quinn Caputo, De Medeiros, Patrick Duggan, Jin Greene, Emerson Sanchez, and Jonny Deng. Every member of the team was cheering, bringing impressive energy into the next event.
According to Wong and Shek, Caputo carried the team up by winning the 400 yard freestyle relay by .83 seconds with a 3:33.25 second race.
“In the final event at the end of the 400, we were down 6 seconds and Quinn really came back and out-touched the other guy,” said Wong.
According to Manning, the team’s regular season ended and they will attend the upcoming Bay State Championships and the Sectional Champion Conference in the postseason. “The team is excited,” he added.
“We’re just working hard to get the win at Bay States next week, I know we can do it,” said Shek.
The Tigers, 7-1, placed second in the Bay State Championships.
