Girls’ indoor track showcased impressive talent at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) Freshman-Sophomore meet Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
The MSTCA meet is reserved for only Freshmen and Sophomores to compete in, which gives the younger members of the team a chance to earn medals and demonstrate their skills.
Sophomore Blake MacNeal won both the 55m hurdles and long jump, an impressive feat at a championship meet, and earned athlete of the meet. Sophomore Maggie Abely won first in the mile. Sophomore Sophie Finkelstein placed third in the 55m dash, and second in long jump.
“The meet went really well. I won my race, and I felt really good,” said Abely.
“I think my highlight was seeing my friends after because everyone’s really happy. A couple of my teammates also won things, which is fun.”
In both relay events, North athletes displayed teamwork in seamless baton passes and strong running. The 4×400 relay placed sixth.
“As a team, our 4×200 relay was amazing. They came in second, and qualified for D1 states as a freshman and sophomore team. To do that is pretty impressive,” said assistant coach Joanna Mantell.
According to head coach Mike Travers, if the meet were scored with championship scoring, North would have earned 74 points, which is a significant amount, especially at a high level meet.
“I’m just excited for our freshmen to be sophomores next year because they’ll be a year more developed, and they will get a chance to rise to the top,” added Mantell.
The Tigers, 4-0 will race against Natick Thursday, Jan. 23 at Natick.
