Girls’ soccer overtook Weymouth 3-2 Wednesday, Oct. 23 at home, breaking a losing streak and winning its senior night matchup for the first time in three years.
According to senior Sophia Mitchell, the game felt like a perfect end to the season.
“It was a really nice game and all of the seniors played so well because of how hyped up we were,” said Mitchell. “It was just a lot of fun and we all really needed this win, not only for our stats but also I think we all just really wanted it.”
In the first half of the game, Weymouth dominated North every kick they took. With only twelve minutes left on the clock, Weymouth was leading 2-0 and the odds were not looking good for the Tigers.
“We were all super stressed and a lot of us thought we had to accept our fate that we were not going to win the game, but the seniors were trying to keep our hopes up which I thought was really nice,” said sophomore Isabel Morse.
As the second half began, North’s spirit was through the roof and every Tiger played with grit and aggression. After an intense back and forth, sophomore Skye Larson scored North’s first goal.
The rhythm of the game began to pick up as cheers from the audience and words of encouragement from their teammates on the sidelines motivated the girls on the field. According to senior Vivian Kritzer, a captain along with seniors Eden Cha and Alissa Kraus, the girls on the sidelines had never been so fired up at a game before.
Within the last ten minutes of the game, Cha scored another goal for North, tying the score. The closing minutes were filled with tension, but the Tigers would not accept a tie. Only a minute after Cha’s goal, Kritzer scored the final goal for North, securing the victory.
“For the seniors, it was kind of sad knowing that this was our last season. I think we all have an attachment to it but I know that our positive attitude has pushed us through a difficult season,” said Kritzer.
The night concluded with a cherished tradition where juniors presented customized twin bed sheets for each senior. They do this and use the sheets as capes to run up and down the field. Decorated with the seniors’ favorite things, these personalized gifts are given after the game, along with poems written by the juniors, in a heartfelt ceremony with parents and friends in attendance.
The Tigers, 9-7-2, will play Newton South in the first round of the playoff tournament, Monday, Nov. 4.
