Parents attended students’ classes and met with teachers during Back to School Night Thursday, Sept. 19.
During 10-minute periods for each class, parents were able to ask questions and learn about this year’s curriculum.
“It’s good to put a face to a name when you’re hearing your kids talk about their teachers, and what they are learning in class,” said Heather Adams, a parent. “It’s also better to get a different perspective on the assignments other than what you’re hearing from your kids.”
Parents were also able to get to know the school environment and understand students’ perspectives as they go about their days.
“I learned that the advisory structure works to create balance for the students,” said Terry Bradshaw, a parent. “I also learned the philosophy about the teaching, and what my son’s day looks like,” he added.
With parents in an unfamiliar environment, though, the hallways became disorganized, according to special education teacher Melynda Meszko-Cameron.
“There were a ton of parents wandering in the halls trying to find their kids’ classrooms, but it was a nice way to connect with families even with how hectic it was,” said Meszko-Cameron.
Overall, parent night was a success, and many families came out, according to Vice Principal Amy Winston.
“I always think a highlight is the positive energy on main street, ” said Winston.“Also, all of the parents and family members get to see how much the teachers here enjoy getting to know all of their students,” she added.
