What better way to spend a Friday evening than inside North’s competition gym, surrounded by spectators wearing bright orange Superfan t-shirts, screaming “Let’s go Tigers”?
Girls’ volleyball defeated North Quincy Friday, Sept. 13 in the Reggie Gym, winning three consecutive sets in a nail-biting thriller against North Quincy.
“We played as a team and moved the ball around well,” said senior Devon Burke, a captain along with senior Alexa Marucci. “Everyone got their chance and we moved together as one.”
The Tigers started strong, fueled by the energy of a boisterous crowd. Despite their ability to pull ahead right out of the gate, North could have been more aggressive and hungry for the win, according to Burke.
“We need to hit more consistently. We played down tonight, and I think we can play better next game,” said Burke.
North Quincy took control of the second set after losing the first 25-13, and the Tigers were forced to ramp up their gameplay.
According to Burke, the team’s freshmen led the charge in bringing the Tigers back into the game.
“It’s so exciting when our freshmen go on serving runs. It’s really fun to watch since they’ve been working so hard,” she said.
However, the team played too comfortably, according to Fox.
“I think we played like we knew we were going to win, and North Quincy had a lot to come back at us with,” Fox said. “We played well, but we can always be better and I think we can minimize the errors that we made.”
Even though North didn’t put out its best performance during the second set, the Tigers won 25-11.
During the third set, North stuck to its rock-solid starting lineup and maximized on kills.
North was winning the third set 21-11 before North Quincy’s coach called a time-out. North Quincy followed up the time-out with a three-point scoring streak, but the Tigers fought back with fire and secured the third set 25-19.
“We’re definitely a younger team,” said Fox. “It’s really the best thing to have options and be able to put people in different places, so I’m glad we’re able to do that.”
The Tigers, 9-0, defeated Braintree, Needham, Framingham, and Milton. They will play Weston Friday, Sept. 27 in the Reggie Gym.
