The Science Olympiad team placed second at the Massachusetts State Science Olympiad  Saturday, March 23.

At the Olympiad hosted by Framingham State University, fifty five high school teams from all over the state attended the competition. North won five out of 21 total events and placed second and third in seven other events.

Senior Laura Schmidt-Hong, a captain, said she is happy with the results and hopes the team continues improving.

“I think it went really well. I’m really proud of the team,” she said.“Before the Olympiad, we attended a couple invitational competitions at MIT, Harvard, and Brown. Our team has shown a lot of improvement and hard work.”

North’s 15 Science Olympiad team members took part in a variety of individual events such as Astronomy and Physiology.

For the last two years, the Science Olympiad team dominated the competition, scoring second place last year and third place two years ago.

“Our team captains are super easy to talk to and great role models,” said junior Emily Pan, the vice president of the Science Olympiad team.“They are constantly helping members on the team. Our captains really make sure that nobody on the team has to worry about anything other than competing in the events.”

Competition day consists of five hour-long timeslots. Each team member is assigned two to three individual events. During each event, a test is given based on the topic of the event. Olympiad scoring for each team looks at each event placing. The team with the lowest score takes home first place.

The science team has one more competition this year on May 17th at Envirothon.
