Girls’ gymnastics, 11-0, won the Bay State Conference Championship with 139.75 points last Saturday. “Even with a thin team, we still had a lot of depth,” said head coach Jim Chin.
North relied on their freshmen, Elizabeth Elvin and Nina Varady, who competed in the all-around competition.
“We’ve had injuries this season but they have preserved the whole time,” said senior Shannon Murphy, a captain with senior Sonya Feng.
The team started their day on the vault, where sophomore Olivia Mooradian stuck her tsuk to put her team in the lead.
“It felt great,” Mooradian said. “I’ve been working on that skill all year, and it was awesome to stick it.”
Varady followed up with 9.45 points on vault which tied her with Needham senior Megan Tormey for first place.
Despite a long wait between events to compete on the uneven bars, North maintained the highest team score for the event. Elvin took first with a 9.1, and Varady followed with a 9.0.
The Tigers struggled on beam but got back to business during their floor rotation, scoring a combined 33.9, the third best in the meet. Junior Lexie Chu tied for fourth on floor with a 9.0.
Tormey scored a 36.8 to take the all-around title, but North’s freshmen were right behind, as Varady placed second with a 36.25, and Elvin in third at a 35.7.
“They nailed their routines on all four events,” Chin said when describing the impact Elvin and Varady had on the meet.
North will compete in the sectional meet after February break.
