All of North’s music groups came together to wrap up the year with Pops Night, a concert celebrating the year’s accomplishments, with a medley of student-arranged songs, and playful humor last Thursday at 7 p.m., in the cafeteria.
Each ensemble performed around one or two pieces and was an open admission concert that included a potluck and offered an entertaining show.
The concert began with Tiger Bebop’s take on the jazzy classic “The Way You Look Tonight.” The song was a perfect choice for Tiger Bebop due to its sweet and cheerful melody.
Conducted by senior Kate Martenis, Tiger Bebop then performed an acapella version of “Blackbird” by The Beatles. The troupe’s voices blended into a cohesive, angelic sound. Exquisite high notes were also sung and echoed with beautiful harmonies.
Next, Jazz Ensemble played the theme song to “The Incredibles.” The childhood classic was spectacular due to the ensemble’s perfect tempo and impressive technique.
Then, each member of Jazz Ensemble took turns playing a solo on either the saxophone, trumpet, electric guitar, drums, or bongos.
Orchestra sported comical pirate hats as they gave homage to the “Pirates of the Caribbeans” and played the heroic, exciting melody. The song began with a fast-paced tempo and gradually increased momentum to create a beautifully chaotic end. The performance was excited for the audience due to the intricate tempo skills Orchestra demonstrated.
Next, Jubilee sang “One More Time,” by Romanthony. Senior soloist Elise Hausman executed phenomenally powerful notes that enhanced the group’s performance. Junior soloist Grace Kellman also sang an emotional solo and fascinated the audience with her sensationally smooth voice.
The Wind Ensemble then graced the floor with various heartfelt selections from the “Lion King.” The breathtaking medley was quiet yet powerful and introduced a sense of nostalgia to the audience. Wind Ensemble received uproarious praises due to its notable professionalism and flawless medley.
Sophomore musician Ryan Park described Pops Night as unique because it allowed students from different groups to “experience what the other groups have prepared.”
Awards were then presented to impactful seniors and gave recognition to hardworking graduating students. Senior Kate Martenis was recognized for her exemplary work and determination with the Henry Lasker Award.
“It was a really great night and a lot of fun to hear all the groups perform,” said Martenis.
The concert ended with Concert Choir, Jubilee, and Family Singers performing “Seasons of Love.” The groups joined together for a glorious grand finale. The song expressed a sense of unity and truly celebrated the year that had passed.
Sophomore Concert Choir member Martha Bennett’s favorite part of the concert was at the end when all the choruses came together to sing “Seasons of Love”. “There was a great sense of community,” she explained.
Pops Night was an all-inclusive concert that showcased the students’ hard work throughout the year. It was a success due to the students’ enthusiasm and sophisticated skillset.
