Girls’ cross country, 7-4, is looking to secure a spot in the All-States meet. In order to qualify, the Tigers would have to be one of the top four division one teams. Currently the Tigers sit in third place in the standings.
After a difficult schedule led to a 2-3 start, the Tigers have won five of six meets and lost to Milton.
Senior Victoria Spitaels, a captain with seniors Natalie Cohen, Westley Joseph, Ruby Mayer, and Dee Wu, said the most impressive race for the Tigers was their win against Weymouth where; Weymouth runners finished first and second, but the Tigers still managed to win. She said that it spoke to the depth of the team.
That depth comes from a team of 60 girls. Having a team this big comes with its ups and downs, according to Joseph.
“It requires a really good sense of memory to grasp all the names and can be hard to plan team bonding events with so many people but for the most part it is really rewarding and amazing! It is really fun to be part of a big team where everyone cares about everyone,” she said.
Most recently the Tigers defeated Brookline 23-33 Saturday, Oct. 31, the last dual race of the year and the last home race for the seniors.
Three meets sit between the Tigers and All-States. Looking to build off the win against Brookline, the Tigers will travel to Norwood to compete at the Bay State Conference Meet Saturday Oct. 31. Norwood is a familiar site to the Tigers, as they ran the course at their first meet of the season.
“We’re hoping to come home with many pumpkins and a whole bunch of personal records” said Spitaels as pumpkins are given as prizes.
The following Saturday Nov. 7, the Tigers will travel to Wrentham for the State Coaches Individual. The next week will be one of the most important meets of the season as they will travel back to Wrentham for the Division One States Meet, which “hopefully will qualify us to go to All-States” said Spitaels.
If the Tigers qualify, they will send their top seven runners to the meet. Sophomore Einat Gavish, Spitaels, sophomore Rose Teszler, senior Cat Teasdale, senior Leah Metzger, freshman Olivia Micalizzi, and senior Sarah Williams respectively are the top seven runners currently and are the most likely to go to All-States according to Spitaels.
“Olivia Micalizzi had a breakthrough performance on Saturday at Stanley Park, and it’s great to see the underclassmen making significant impacts to our team” said Spitaels.
