Despite strong performance, Tigers lose to Walpole

by Gloria Li

At home, Wednesday, Walpole broke the Tiger’s undefeated record with a 26-29 victory against them in a tri-meet that included Needham.
“We won against Needham handily,” coach Jim Blackburn said, “but Walpole was more of a problem.”
According to Blackburn, the Tigers defeated Walpole last year, and despite the loss, the Tigers performed well  in that many of the team’s members beat their personal records.
Junior Cris Wein said, “The conditions were perfect for running today.”
Senior Steven Michael said, “The ideal running conditions, the overcast sky without rain and a slightly chilly temperature, those aspects of the meet today helped us a lot.”
Blackburn said the two most outstanding members who beat their personal records were junior David Demarest with a 45 second decrease and junior Jonny Long with a 30 second decrease in his time.
Senior Justin Keefe, a captain with senior David Buzby, usually the overall number one, came in second with a time of 16:20.
Sophomore Gabe Montague placed second on the team with 17:08.
Behind him, sophomore Mike Schlicting came in third with 17:14, and Demarest placed fourth with 17:15, and Long placed fifth with 17:21.
Buzby said “I beat my personal record today by four seconds, but I didn’t feel like I was going fast enough. I never got into a good rhythm, which I’m usually able to get into during a meet.”
He said he was not as tired as he expected to be after the meet, instead, he felt more zoned out than anything else.
“We’ve just realized today how much of a challenge Walpole is actually posing this year,” Buzby said.
Wein said, “Despite the loss, this meet brought us closer as a team, and everyone looked nice on the course.”
