Members of North’s quiz team qualified for the next round of the WGBH High School Quiz Show after emerging as one of the top 16 schools out of 119 to compete in a preliminary round Nov. 3.
The quiz team, which is advised by history teachers Albert Cho and Gregory Drake, was created last year by members of the Class of ’14.  This year’s members are seniors Zachary Bennett, Nathan Buchwald, Tommy Mobley, Elliot Sackman, and Connor Vasu, and junior Andrew Libraty.
According to Bennett, the preliminary round tested team members primarily on their knowledge of history, but some questions also related to science, math, literature, mythology, geography, current events, and “old cardiologists from five hundred years ago that nobody has ever heard of.”
Mobley added that “It’s tough to study for the quiz bowl because the range of questions is so broad,” but that the best way to practice is to watch another quiz show and test yourself on each question.
The WGBH event will take place the weekend of January 24, said Buchwald, and North students are encouraged to attend to offer their support. The event will be taped but will not air until a later date.
Mobley also noted that although it is impressive that the team has qualified for this event, “none of us are satisfied right now and we are humble and hungry to bring a title back to North.”
“It’s incredible to get the chance to be on TV,” said Mobley. “All of us have a huge love for knowledge and we like to show it off. I just can’t wait to compete with all of my teammates against some other schools.”
