Girls’ gymnastics, 2-1, suffered its first loss of the season against Needham on Friday at home 133.65 to 131.1.
“We didn’t have many mistakes, it just wasn’t our best meet,” said senior Lili Margolin, a captain with seniors Allie Hurwitz and Rachel Vasilyev.
According to coach Jim Chin the team is approaching the tough part of their competition.
“Walpole, Wellesley and Braintree are all scoring very well. We need our best lineup against those three teams.”
The team is working on its consistency, according to Margolin. “The only way our team can improve is if every girl takes advantage of each practice, just to stay consistent,” she said.
According to Chin, the team also needs to improve on beam.
“Beam continues to be our inconsistent event,” he said. “Needham improved dramatically and we couldn’t match their performance.”
“We’ve had a lot of injuries among our strongest gymnasts,” said Vasilyev, “but the rest of the team has really stepped it up.”
Junior Julia Wang and sophomore Amara Lutwack are vital to the team, according to Margolin. Both are all-around competitors, and are responsible for a significant portion of the team’s score, according to Chin.
Hurwitz, along with freshmen Rachel Adamsky and Calley Dias, are out for the season.
According to Margolin, Dias has contributed a lot to the team. Chin said that Adamsky was a valuable competitor, and that “Hurwitz’s absence from the lineup clearly impacts the team.”
Hurwitz injured her knee in the first meet. Adamsky fractured two vertebrae after the first meet, and Dias broke her foot during practice after the second meet.
“Our outlook now is to stay healthy,” said Chin. “The team must avoid future injuries.”
The team will compete in the Bay State Conference championship Saturday, Feb. 9, and in an MIAA tournament Saturday, Feb. 23.
