Alpine skiing began its season with its first race Thursday, the girls placing fifth and the boys placing last out of seven teams, Brookline, Dover Sherborn, Easton, Marblehead, Waltham, Wellesley and Xavieirian, according to senior Julie Chan, a captain with senior Mark Vrahas.
“We did pretty well overall, considering that this was the first race of the season,” Chan said. “I think a lot of people were nervous because it was the first race, so we didn’t do as well as we could have.”
The team had a lot of spirit and created a good atmosphere for its skiers, according to Chan. “The team’s attitude was really great. Everyone supported each other and cheered one another on,” she said.

Chan said that the newer skiers are developing well. “They’re definitely improving and doing even better than we expected,” she said.
The team’s next race is Thursday at Blue Hills. Chan said she predicts the team will have a better performance this time around.
“We just have to work as hard as we can for the next race, and we’ll definitely do better,” she said.
