Girls’ cross country, 10-1, placed seventh at All-States Saturday after having qualified for the meet by placing fourth at the Division I State Meet, according to coach Brandon Mogayzel.
The team beat Weymouth for the fourth time this year at the meet, which was one of its goals for the race, according to Mogayzel.
“We were projected to place in between eighth and tenth, so getting seventh was a nice surprise,” Mogayzel said.
Sophomore Sonya Jampel placed 22nd at the meet, and sophomore Leah Metzger placed 47th, according to Mogayzel. Seniors Meghan Bellerose and Kaylee Spitaels, captains with seniors Caroline Loftus and Julia Schlossman, made strong contributions, he said.
“On this particular course, a smart runner takes the first mile a little conservatively, and we definitely executed that part of the race well,” he said. “We trained this season to prepare for a hilly course, and I think the training paid off.”
Mogayzel said that he hopes the experience of going to All-States will be a motivation for next year’s team, since the last time the team competed was in 2004.
