Athletes Serving the Community (ASC) Newton, a local community service-based program for student athletes, hosted an event for senior citizens Saturday in this school’s cafeteria.
According to John Lilly, former parent at this school who is now involved with ASC Newton, over 60 students volunteered, most of whom were from this school and South. However, he said that “all students were welcome.”
He said that there were “singing groups, jazz bands and dance groups,” all comprised of students. Lunch and snacks were also provided. Over 100 senior citizens showed up for the event, according to Lilly.
The purpose of the event was “to give back to those who have helped Newton so much in the past,” he said.
The event was funded by Newton ASC, as well as by donations from the community.
Lilly said that ASC Newton was started 10 years ago to “help student athletes find community service opportunities.”
