Younger players help golf in early season successes

by Ryan Condon
This school’s golf team furthered its already successful week Wednesday, Sept. 14, when the Tigers triumphed over Braintree 70-38.
The squad was coming off of a victory over Dedham Monday, Sept. 12 and a close match against Wellesley Tuesday, Sept. 13 in which the Tigers won by a single point.
According to sophomore Charlie Goldberg, a captain with senior Jeff Howard and junior Brendan Ryan, the younger players on the team stepped up during the match and propelled the team to victory.  Goldberg said the newer players played “just as well as any of the older players,” giving new life to the team.
This year, Goldberg said the team is very deep. “We just have a lot of good players, without any weak links,” he said.
Moving forward, Goldberg said the team will work on taking the match one hole at a time.  “We really need to stay in the hole, in the moment, because you never know when you might make a long putt or chip it in and that really helps the team,” he said.
The team’s strength this year is its ability to create a large lead early in the match, he said.  “Once we’re ahead by a good amount, it takes the pressure off and we’re free to play our own game,” he said.
